Taxi drivers to go on 24 hour strike

Taxi drivers across the Island have stated that they will go on strike from 6am on Thursday 14th July for 24 hours.

This is in response to a meeting held with the Government over the a failure to meet their demands over the public transport system, an excess of licensed and illegal taxi drivers.

Taxi drivers in Famagusta were not happy with the proposals by the Communications Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis to increase the night fare on the buses and reduce the number of buses running.

The Taxi drivers are demanding more concessions.

FAMAGUSTA district taxi drivers are threatening to block access to airports, and motorways  if the government fails to satisfy their demands.

They are demanding an increase in bus fares and a reduction in bus routes.   They state that the new public transport system with more buses and cheap fares had caused a reduction  to their business.


Taxi drivers demand hike in bus fares

FAMAGUSTA taxi drivers yesterday demanded publicly-run buses raise their fares and reduce their frequency of operation, among others things, to save themselves from going bust, irrespective of what was best for the consumer.

The taxi drivers blocked the Ayia Triada roundabout, in Protaras, for five minutes to protest the “dire financial situation they have been in for years”.
And they warned of “stronger measures” if their demands were not met.
